My Accidental Journey into Freelancing: From Low Paying Job to Full Time Freelancer

When I first started my career, I never thought I would end up as a full-time freelance website developer. But sometimes, life takes you on unexpected paths, and I found myself embarking on a journey I had never planned for.

YEAR 2017: After my graduation, I was looking for the opportunities to begin my journey in the corporate world. One of my senior cousin (calling him senior as he’s 15 years older than me) own a web development firm in Delhi. I started working with him. I began as an intern, making just 3,000 rupees per month. I was just a fresher who doesn’t have any knowledge of sales, web, corporate, digital world simply everything.

However, my job taught me many valuable skills such as communication with clients, designing and developing websites, managing finances, and providing support even after delivery.

Despite learning all these valuable skills, I was not earning enough money, and I was not satisfied with the work culture. I was doing everything from my end but getting very little in return. It was a hard-working entrepreneur kind of journey, but it was also frustrating, and I knew I needed to make a change.

I worked there for 3.5 years and in Aug 2021. I left my job with nothing planned. Just start preparing for UPSC CDSE. prepared for 5-6 months and gave myself a deadline to crack any govt exam or start looking for another job.

As you know I was working with my relative so I’ve not really experienced a professional office culture. I was not even sure of my designation. I was more like a mix of everything just like jack of all trades master of none.

Looking for a freelance website developer?

Cut to Dec 2021, decided to do something to get money and was eagrly looking for opportunities in web development. Started watching videos nhow to crack interviews, how to get clients, where to get clients, etc. I’ve heard about the freelancing but never knew how it’d have been done. Came across a lot of videos which says be active on social media to get the client. I started with linkedin started reaching out to peoples but got no response for a month.

Jan 5: Got my first client from linkedin and this is where my freelance journey started and it’s been more than 1.4 years and never looked back.

I worked from home for like 1 year and in Jan 2023, I shifted to a office where I hired 2 designer and 1 developer to work with and so far it’s going great.

Finally, it is important to be prepared for the ups and downs of freelancing. Freelancing can be a great way to earn a good income, but it can also be unpredictable. You may experience periods of feast and famine, and it is important to have a plan in place for managing your finances during these times. Additionally, freelancing can be isolating, particularly if you work from home. It is important to take steps to stay connected with others in your field, whether through online communities or in-person meetups.

STAY TUNED.
